No one makes their dreams come true without the love and support of others. I have amazing friends and family, but there are four people who really make me who I am and make this life possible.

1. My parents

Enjoying an autumn picnic with my parents.

My parents taught my sisters and I invaluable, people-building lessons

  • I can do anything I set my mind to
  • The ability to help others is a blessing
  • There’s a wide world out there – explore it
  • Love – even when you don’t feel like it
  • Oceans are for swimming in!
  • Let my little light shine

My parents are loving, supportive and adventurous. Without them, a life of adventure wouldn’t even occur to me.

2. My sons

Family holiday 1999 – we’ve come a long way, babies.

My sons have never begrudged me my dreams – in fact, they have fueled them. I went to graduate school while they were in elementary school, and we would sit and do homework together. I often feel as though I grew up alongside them. As my grandmother said, I was ‘a very young 21’ when my oldest was born.

I learn constantly from my sons about keeping on, creating life as it comes, accepting others, and being true to oneself without imposing what’s right for me on others. They are loving, bold, intelligent and funny.

I am so proud of the young men they have become, and couldn’t go on my adventures without their encouragement and belief in me. Being away from them for 6 months is the hardest part of saying yes to this journey – good thing they’re likely to come visit.
